While reading this week, I tuned into an interview on the radio and heard this:
Be kind: for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.
That pretty well nails it. Few of us look like we're fighting great battles. Most of us try to present a very "together" and "cool" and "confident" face to the world. Still, under that, each of us is embroiled in a difficulty, some work, a disappointment, a danger, a risk, a fear, a loss, a weakness, an enemy, a resistance from the world, an uncopacetic something everyday. It reminded me of the Hafiz poem which goes sort of: We are all holding hands and climbing. Letting go is not a option. It's much too steep here for that.
