Pelosi's Wisdom

Recent Politics in my house in the form of an email:

Dear Mom and Dad, friends of my parents, and their friends,

Last night my dad showed me the email y'all sent of the "interview" with Pelosi in it. I was amazed. I'm a progressive Dem myself, and let me tell you, even we progressives are not patently nuts. ;-)

Now, should you have sent this to us as a joke, Bonus Satire Points for you! And my hat's off. Still, with politics being what they are these days, I thought I would just make sure that your Satire RADAR was working.

"UPDATE 12/09/06 7:19 p.m.:We posted this PELOSI PARODY, author unknown, before checking out the source. And yes it is a parody. While it is easy to believe these quotes came from a Socialist Democrat like Pelosi (and who hasn't heard lefties say these things?) we sincerely apologize if anyone's blood pressure (on the right or on the left) shot up a few degrees after reading it. Lesson learned. Mea culpa. -- the Blog Meister"

The Blogger believed Pelosi said nutty things because it fit so nicely with his/her political bias, which is more than evident in the blog. Which is fine. I believe in bias, it's called opinion, but it can lead us all astray from time to time. We have to check our biases from time to time. Because I am a Leftie, I hang with Lefties, I read Lefties regularly, and I have never ever ever heard any of them say these things. On the fringes, maybe, but the Left Fringe holds no sway. They are the silliest of prejudices because bias has to do with ideas, and all we have to do to correct that is To Read What the Other Position Has To Say. No degree in social anthropology required.

It's from:

You have to scroll down to find the "article." And Pelosi is not a socialist democrat. She's from SF, sure, but she's an old fashioned liberal with a mind.

Just watch it out there on the net, ok? When there's no source, or when it's not an interview in a national paper, or a national analysis magazine, ignore it. Always ignore it. Or track it down. Unless it's The Onion, in which it's Always a Joke, and if you don't get that, shame on you. People in your generation were supposedly better educated than the generation that writes the Onion. This is very dirty pool, people, no matter what blogger on what band of the political spectrum does it. Or, it becomes dirty pool with people fail to recognize parody or satire and take it as some kind of gospel. So, slow down, and double check. I found this by typing the title and the first sentence into Google -- exactly the same way I check for plagiarism in my student's papers. These days, you must remember that the word "published" doesn't mean True or Authoritative or Actually Happenend.
