The DUH of the Foley Story

Dear OP/ED Writers and Democratic Strategists,

The obvious counter-point to the Foley Spin Cycle is this: The GOP, as a party, has demonstrated that it is more interested in power than in human well being, or even its own professed values. They allowed this man to stay in his Congressional seat in order to keep control of a district in Florida. This was more of a value, a priority, than the sexual and psychological safety and integrity of the pages working in the Congress. There is a conservative value that trumps sexual propriety, moral integrity, and obedience to the decrees of their faith: power, brutal and simple. When you finally step up and say this you will have a story that helps the situation. This is the unfortunate and sad event that allows you to show, in stark contrast, the difference between what the GOP claims to stand for and what it really will stand for.

This is not a party interested in a culture of life. That culture is futural yet, and not one they can create. This is a party interested in quite other goals.
